MONUMENT “THE GIRL WITH THE TURTLE”.

VIVAS VALDES, VEUDI (2023). NOTES AND RESEARCH – CHRONICLER AND HISTORIAN OF COZUMEL. INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY THE DIRECTORATE OF TOURISM AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF COZUMEL.

The sculpture “La Niña de la Tortuga” on the boardwalk of the city of Cozumel, was installed in November 2007 almost in front of the museum of the city; it is a work elaborated in bronze, under the procedure of the lost wax of the sculptor Carlos Terrés. This was his first work on the island.

Due to Hurricane Wilma in 2005, this beautiful work of art was missing buried in the sand for more than a year, and when it was found, it was reinstalled in its current location.

The sculpture represents a girl blowing a reed flute sitting on the shell of a turtle, the master Terrés, wanted to leave a testimony of the joy of life, respect for what exists in nature and hope for the ecological preservation of our natural wealth.

The girl sitting on the turtle playing her flute with the breath of life, is a symbol of protection and birth, it is also a symbol of the Mayan star-sign “lamat” Venus mother of birth. The drawings on the turtle’s shell represent the origin, and by the way the turtle’s head sticks out, it symbolizes the birth of light.

In the Mayan codices the sun is described covered by a turtle shell and a legend says that: “… the gods were transported over the sea on top of turtles…”, what better symbol of God than children, and what better symbol of life than the divine breath.

The sculpture was donated to the island of Cozumel on April 10th, 2001, by Mrs. Elvia García Valencia de Terrés, wife of the master and native of this island, where its people, its coral reefs, its sea and its natural beauty are its main attraction. Mrs. Elvia wished that this gift be for those who live and visit the place where it first saw the light, that it be a symbol of peace and ecological respect, a gift of love for the beings who live in good will in this our blue planet.
