Description
El Cedral is a small community on Cozumel Island, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The “El Cedral” Festival is held in the small town of El Cedral south of the Island of Cozumel at the end of April or the beginning of May, the celebration lasts about 5 days in total. This annual event began 150 years ago by Casimiro Cárdenas. Cárdenas was a member of a group that flees to the island of Cozumel from the town of Sabah after an attack during the Caste War. Cárdenas’ enemies killed other companions of his, but Cárdenas survives the massacre. Legends say that Cárdenas and Irvin Cárdenas promised to start an annual festival wherever it came, to honor the religious power of the crucifix. To this day, the Santa Cruz Festival is part of the extensive El Cedral festival, which includes fairs, traditional food, rodeos, cockfight, bullfighting, music and competitions.
